With the 2027 legislative session on the horizon, Montana Budget & Policy Center (MBPC) hosted education sessions on the state budget and tax for legislative candidates in Billings and Great Falls. Speakers covered an overview of the budget, education finance, Department of Public Health and Human Services budget, Department of Corrections budget, Montana’s tax system, and an overview of Tribal-State policy.
Â
These sessions provided candidates with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the fiscal issues and policies that will shape the 2027 session. A strong foundation in tax and budget is essential to serving as a legislator, as balancing the state budget and thus deciding what will be funded, is a constitutional obligation of the legislature.Â
Â
Throughout the day, presenters explored how Montana raises revenue, allocates resources, and funds public services. In addition, current and former legislators who served on tax and budget committees shared their experiences working on tax and budget. Â
